Is Google Making Us Stupid

Upon printing out this article, I remember thinking how long it was and how I didn’t want to spend my time reading a long and most likely boring article. It wasn’t until I got through the first page that I found out how ironic these thoughts were. When I realized that my own attitude was directly linked to the article, I began to read through it eagerly.

This article, by Nicholas Carr, was engrossing and intriguing. He managed to create an article that presented his own thoughts, along with the opinions of others in a very non-condescending way. I could tell that the author had strong opinions, but I could also tell that he was respectful of the views of others and did not necessarily believe that his thoughts were absolutely correct.

This article really got me thinking about the way not only my generation, but also myself, are impatient for information and always wish to have information at the click of a button (or a mouse!) In these days of modern technology, we no longer need to spend the time searching for anything. It has all been given to us through the internet.

I completely agree with Carr’s opinions. I consider myself a case and point of his argument. Even now, I struggle to complete this assignment as I am barraged by social networking and other media sources found so easily on the computer. Looking back upon the comments I heard throughout the last school year such as, “I can’t believe we have to read three chapters!” and “Really? A two-page essay? You must be kidding.” The internet is making us lazy by making everything easily available to huge sources of information.

Although the internet may be creating a world in which the hunt is no longer as valuable as the catch, that does not make it evil or bad. The internet is an amazing invention and has helped countless good things to come into this world. The only problem is that we must be wary of how we use this power, and we must make sure that we stay away from completely relying upon the computer.
